Though the Constitution says that “all men are created equal” the reality was anything but. Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s most famous founding fathers, himself owned 130 slaves at Monticello. The Missouri History Museum, in conjunction with the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello in partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, brings us Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty. They do it with slave narratives, archaeological excavations and documents found at the Plantation. Examine the everyday lives of six slaves who lived and worked for Jefferson as enslaved field hands, artisans, and domestic workers. Many of Thomas Jefferson personal artifacts will also be on display. Sarah tells viewers all about it. Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty is currently showing until March 2nd.
