The Streckfus family’s Admiral Riverboat served as the focus for social gatherings for generations of St. Louisans. It graced the St. Louis riverfront from 1940 until 1978 with its five distinctive style decks, and daily and nightly excursions on the Mississippi. Visitors could experience ballroom dancing, numerous dining choices, teenage rock bands, and much more. A then, young high school graduate, Annie Amantea Blum began a career on board that lasted for the next 18 summers keeping books, doing payroll, counting money and working the stands. In 1978, the Admiral’s reign on the riverfront ended when it was turned into a casino. As a labor of love, Blum writes about the history of the Admiral and other steamers in her new book, The Steamer Admiral and Streckfus Steamers, A Personal View. She shares all her many memories with host, Steve Potter.
